Microservices became harder to maintain
Service logic had grown complex over time, making changes slower, riskier, and harder for engineers to reason about.
Case Study / Cloud Security
Backend cleanup and stabilization across Node.js, TypeScript, NestJS, and AWS Lambda to improve maintainability, release safety, and production reliability.
The challenge
The product backend had grown complex over time, and core services needed structural cleanup to reduce operational friction and development risk.
The goal was not only to refactor code, but to improve the surrounding engineering foundations: tests, deployment quality, and delivery consistency.
Service logic had grown complex over time, making changes slower, riskier, and harder for engineers to reason about.
The backend needed stronger structure, cleaner boundaries, and better operational confidence under real usage.
Without enough automated test confidence, incremental refactors and releases carried avoidable risk.
Code-level fixes alone were not enough; CI/CD and deployment quality had to improve alongside service refactoring.
What we built
This engagement focused on refactoring backend microservices to improve maintainability, scalability, and production reliability.
The work combined service-level cleanup with practical engineering discipline around testing and delivery so improvements would hold up long term.
Simplified backend flows and reorganized service boundaries to make the codebase easier to understand, extend, and maintain.
Improved service quality and consistency across NestJS and Lambda-based components to reduce production fragility.
Aligned APIs and service behavior around cleaner serverless patterns using Amazon API Gateway and AWS Lambda.
Increased automated test confidence to make refactoring safer and improve release reliability over time.
Connected backend improvements with CI/CD and deployment automation practices so fixes could ship safely and consistently.
Applied practical DevOps and observability thinking to support maintainable operations, not just cleaner code in isolation.
What we learned
This project reinforced that backend refactoring has the highest impact when it is treated as product infrastructure work. Cleaner services, stronger test coverage, and safer deployment workflows combine to create systems that teams can confidently build on over time.
Backend cleanup creates more value when paired with safer release workflows and stable deployment practices.
A technically cleaner codebase still creates risk if CI/CD and operational controls are weak.
Strong typing and clear contracts make service evolution faster and reduce accidental regressions.
As teams and features grow, explicit contracts become a major maintainability multiplier.
Lambda-based systems can become difficult quickly without disciplined architecture and responsibility separation.
Defining clearer service responsibilities improves both scaling behavior and day-to-day engineering productivity.
Stable production systems require observability, repeatable deployment, and testing discipline in addition to backend logic improvements.
The best backend outcomes come from treating code, delivery, and operations as one connected system.
Outcomes
Improved maintainability and production stability across serverless microservices through targeted code and architecture refactoring.
Raised engineering confidence with better Jest coverage and delivery-aware backend practices, making future releases safer and easier to manage.
