Legacy hosting burned pipeline budget
A data pipeline toolkit was expensive to run on legacy hosting, so cost grew with every scheduled job.
Case Study / Cloud Cost Optimization
Legacy Python moved to Flask, Docker, Cloud Run, and Cloud Scheduler — about 80% cheaper on the major pipeline, without rewriting the core logic.
The challenge
The client needed lower cost and clearer operations without throwing away a Python module that already did the job.
The right move was a lean GCP runtime: wrap, containerize, schedule, and hand off with clarity.
A data pipeline toolkit was expensive to run on legacy hosting, so cost grew with every scheduled job.
Rewriting the Python module from scratch would have added risk and delay without improving the business outcome.
Jobs had to run on a predictable schedule with a leaner runtime, not a fragile set of always-on hosts.
The client needed clear code, comments, and a path the team could operate after handoff.
What we built
We wrapped the existing Python module in Flask, packaged it with Docker, and deployed it to GCP Cloud Run with Cloud Scheduler for job timing.
The goal was cost and operability: keep the proven logic, remove the expensive hosting layer, and leave a system the client could understand.
Exposed the existing Python module through a thin Flask service so the pipeline could run as a containerized HTTP job without a full rewrite.
Containerized the service for Cloud Run so scaling and billing followed actual job execution instead of always-on hosts.
Wired Cloud Scheduler to trigger the pipeline on the required cadence with a clear operational path.
Left clear comments and delivery notes so the client could maintain and extend the pipeline after launch.
What we learned
This engagement reinforced that cost and operability often unlock more value than a full rebuild. Cloud Run and Scheduler gave the client a durable path, and the Upwork review called out both delivery quality and teaching.
Moving proven logic to a lean runtime can cut spend faster than a greenfield rebuild.
Cloud Run fit a scheduled workload where legacy hosting was the real cost driver.
A Flask + Docker edge around existing code kept risk low and delivery fast.
The client kept domain logic while gaining serverless-style economics.
Clear comments and structure made the cost win durable after handoff.

Outcomes
About 80% cost reduction on the major pipeline after moving to Cloud Run and Cloud Scheduler.
Client feedback on Upwork: “One of the best freelancers I have ever worked with” — rapid, cost-efficient cloud-native delivery.
