Case Study / Enterprise Finance Operations
A full-stack expense platform with employee and admin portals for receipt uploads, approvals, status tracking, and financial workflow visibility.
The challenge
The goal was to replace manual and fragmented receipt handling with a scalable cloud platform that supported both employee submissions and centralized finance review.
The solution needed secure access, reliable file workflows, clear approval states, and architecture that could grow with business usage without becoming hard to maintain.
The business needed a centralized system to replace scattered workflows and improve visibility across employee card expenses.
Approval and rejection workflows had to be auditable, consistent, and easy for admin teams to monitor at scale.
Submitting receipts and tracking status had to be straightforward so adoption stayed high across day-to-day operations.
As usage grew, the system needed reliable uploads, secure access, and maintainable backend patterns without operational bloat.
What we built
This system combined practical frontend usability with scalable serverless backend architecture for financial operations.
The product included a dedicated employee portal for submissions and tracking, plus an admin portal for review workflows, status management, and business oversight.
Built a user-focused interface for uploading receipts, tracking submission status, and managing card-related expenses with minimal friction.
Implemented tools for reviewing, approving, rejecting, and monitoring receipt activity across teams, creating clearer control and reporting flows.
Used AWS Lambda, Node.js, and TypeScript to power core business logic with scalable API behavior and lower infrastructure overhead.
Integrated Amazon S3 for receipt assets and Amazon SES for workflow-related communication and notification patterns.
Added Azure SSO integration to align authentication and access with enterprise identity requirements.
Structured the platform around maintainable cloud delivery practices compatible with CI/CD, deployment automation, and long-term operations.
What we learned
This project reinforced that enterprise tools are successful when operational controls and user experience are designed together. Strong AWS serverless architecture enabled scalability, but the real product value came from making submission and approval workflows clear for every team involved.
Expense systems succeed when approval states, ownership, and audit paths are easy to follow.
Clear workflow design reduces manual back-and-forth and gives finance teams higher confidence in day-to-day processing.
When employee submission flows are simple, teams provide cleaner and more complete receipt data.
Good UX in internal tools directly impacts downstream reporting and administrative efficiency.
Receipt systems involve variable traffic, asynchronous steps, and file workflows that fit serverless patterns well.
Managed cloud services reduce infrastructure friction while supporting secure, scalable operations.
Backend correctness is only one part of success in business-critical systems.
Stable deployment pipelines, practical monitoring, and secure environments are essential for long-term trust in finance operations.
Outcomes
Delivered a cloud-based receipt and expense management platform with role-specific employee and admin experiences, improving visibility and process consistency.
Built a scalable AWS serverless backend foundation that reduced manual workload and supported secure, maintainable financial operations over time.
